The shuttle has a major influence on how a badminton match or training session feels. Choosing the wrong shuttle can result in unnatural flight characteristics, rapid wear or a shuttle that is too fast or too slow for the conditions in your sports hall. There are several types of badminton shuttles, each with their own characteristics. Below, we explain the differences and help you determine which shuttle best suits your situation.
What types of badminton shuttles are there?
Badminton shuttles are available in several different types. The main differences are the materials used, flight characteristics, durability and the environment in which they are designed to be used.
We distinguish five main types: nylon shuttles, feather shuttles, hybrid shuttles, Carbonsonic shuttles and AirShuttles.
Nylon shuttles
Nylon shuttles have a synthetic skirt and are considerably more durable than traditional feather shuttles. They last longer and are therefore more economical when large numbers of shuttles are used during training sessions or club nights.
Nylon shuttles are particularly suitable for recreational players, beginners, club nights and training sessions. Their flight characteristics differ slightly from those of a feather shuttle, but for recreational use they are a practical choice.
String tension: if you mainly play with nylon shuttles, we recommend a string tension of around 10 kilograms.
Feather shuttles
Feather shuttles are made with natural feathers and provide the most natural flight characteristics. They decelerate more noticeably towards the end of their flight, allowing for precise and technical badminton play.
This is why feather shuttles are widely used by advanced players and in competitive matches. The disadvantage is that feather shuttles are more fragile than nylon shuttles and can therefore wear out more quickly.
Choosing the correct speed is also important with feather shuttles. The speed you need depends partly on the temperature in the sports hall. Further down this page, we explain how to choose the correct shuttle speed.
String tension: if you mainly play with feather shuttles, we recommend a string tension of around 11 kilograms.
Hybrid shuttles
Hybrid shuttles combine synthetic components with natural feathers. The aim is to retain much of the flight and feel of a feather shuttle while improving durability.
They can therefore be an interesting option for players and clubs that want a playing experience closer to feather shuttles while reducing shuttle consumption. Hybrid shuttles provide a middle ground between nylon and traditional feather shuttles.
Carbonsonic shuttles
Carbonsonic shuttles are among the latest developments in badminton. With this type of shuttle, natural feathers are replaced by synthetic material.
The aim is to reproduce the flight characteristics of a feather shuttle as closely as possible while providing greater durability and more consistent quality from one shuttle to the next.
For players who enjoy the playing characteristics of feather shuttles but are looking for a more durable alternative, Carbonsonic shuttles can be an interesting choice.
AirShuttles
AirShuttles are specifically designed for outdoor badminton. They are heavier and more robust than regular badminton shuttles, making them less sensitive to wind.
If you play badminton in the garden, on the beach or on an outdoor badminton court, an AirShuttle is the most suitable choice. These shuttles are not intended for normal indoor use.
Which badminton shuttle speed should you choose?
With feather shuttles, not only the quality but also the speed is important. Shuttle speed is indicated by a speed number on the tube.
The temperature in the sports hall affects how fast a shuttle flies. In a warm hall, a shuttle flies faster, while the same shuttle may fly more slowly in a cold hall. You can compensate for this by choosing a different shuttle speed.
- Warm sports hall: choose a lower shuttle speed, for example speed 77.
- Cold sports hall: choose a higher shuttle speed, for example speed 78.
With the correct speed, the shuttle should land at the appropriate distance after a normal stroke. If your shuttles consistently travel too far or too short during play, this may indicate that the selected speed is not suitable for the conditions in your sports hall.
Which shuttle is right for you?
The best badminton shuttle for you mainly depends on your playing level, the type of badminton you play and how important durability is to you.
- Recreational badminton and training: nylon shuttles are durable, practical and economical.
- Advanced and competitive badminton: feather shuttles provide the most natural flight characteristics.
- Feather-like feel with greater durability: hybrid or Carbonsonic shuttles can be an interesting alternative.
- Outdoor badminton: choose an AirShuttle.
